Why do steel structures need fire protection?

Steel is a non-combustible material, but at high temperatures it loses some of its mechanical properties.

In a fire, this can lead to excessive deformation or loss of load-bearing capacity of the element.

Fire protection slows down the heating of steel and helps it maintain the required load-bearing capacity for the time specified in the design.
